Dilapidated Bridge Carrying DI 300mm Pipeline Over Nyorch Stream to Be Reconstructed; Repair Work May Take 15 Days

NAHARLAGUN I Aug I 20 :

The Department of PHE & WS will completely reconstruct the dilapidated 60-meter-long span wire rope suspension bridge over Nyorch stream on August 23, 2024. This may take around 15 days to complete, after which normal water supply to the consumers of Naharlagun and Nirjuli township will resume.

According to the department, the bridge had outlived its designed period, resulting in the corrosion of steel frames, wire rope, etc., which led to its partial collapse on August 2, 2024.

During construction, the drinking water supply to the affected area will be provided through Tata Mobile tankers.

The 60-meter-long span wire rope suspension bridge over Nyorch stream was built solely for crossing the DI 300 mm diameter water supply mains and was commissioned on January 31, 2008, to cater to the drinking water supply for the twin townships of Naharlagun-Nirjuli.

“The construction of the bridge was undertaken under the scheme, ‘Augmentation of water supply to Naharlagun-Nirjuli township (phase-I) 7MLD,’ which was sanctioned under NLCPR during March 2004 by the DONER Ministry,Government of India,” the department stated in a press release.

This bridge was exclusively meant for crossing the DI 300 mm diameter pipeline over the Nyorch Stream. However, it has been used by villagers and other members of the public in the region while commuting to their fields and for other daily activities.

Furthermore, there are six more GI pipelines (viz., 80 mm diameter, 65 mm diameter – 2 lines, 50 mm diameter – 3 lines) that supply drinking water to Yupia and Nyorch villages and pass through this bridge.
