Inmate Dies Following Brutal Beating by Rehab Staff in Pasighat, 11 detained

11 people, including the rehabilitation center’s management in charge, assistant manager, counselors, detox management in charge, and kitchen in charge, were detained in connection with the tragic death of an inmate who succumbed to beatings inflicted by staff at Serene life Rehabilitation Center in Gumin Nagar, Pasighat.

This was disclosed by Sachin Kumar Singhal, SP of East Siang district, during a press interaction at his office on Monday. The deceased has been identified as 21-year old , Olip Mukerje.

According to Singhal, the deceased did not want to stay in the rehab center and wanted to run away. He planned to escape with a few inmates, but their plan was discovered by the rehab staff.

“Whatever they have done is very wrong. They physically abused the deceased and beat him with sticks. The incident was very unfortunate,” the SP said.

The SP explained that one or two hours after the beating, when the deceased exhibited signs of health issues, he was brought to Bakin Pertin General Hospital, Pasighat where he was pronounced brought dead.

“Severe injury marks were seen on the deceased’s body. The inquest of the body was done at the BPGH, and relevant sections under the law have been registered,” the SP informed.

“ Eleven individuals were apprehended in connection with the case. CCTV footage and other technical evidence are undergoing thorough examination,” the SP revealed.

“The most severe penalties under the new law are imposed in this case. The arrested individuals have been remanded to five days of custody, and bail can only be secured through judicial proceedings,” Singhal added.

To prevent similar incidents in the future, the SP said that a joint inspection of private rehab centers will be conducted with District Administration ,and if necessary, action to shut down rehab centers will be taken.

Earlier, the deceased’s mother filed a written First Information Report (FIR) alleging that her son’s body was brought to BPGH for a post-mortem by rehabilitation center staff around 11:30 pm on July 19 without notifying her.

In the FIR, the deceased’s mother accused the center of murdering her only son and demanded punishment for those responsible for his death.
