Ruksin Police apprehends 4 individuals for allegedly duping businesses with a fake PhonePe app
Ruksin I September I 26 :
Four persons were apprehended by Ruksin Police after they allegedly duped businesses in Ruksin and the surrounding area with a fake “PhonePe” app.
The arrested individuals included Raj Thapa and Boge Sonar, a resident of Nepali Tinali, Jonai Assam. The remaining two were reportedly juveniles.
Police revealed that the scanners used a fake PhonePe app to scan and pay for items purchased from shops. The fake app, which is identical in appearance to the genuine PhonePe app, also emits transaction completion sounds and generates transaction reports, even without an internet connection.
However, the money was not transferred to the recipient’s account.
On September 25, a written FIR was received from Tajong Panyang of Ruksin Village, reporting that Raj Thapa had come to his wine shop in Ruksin earlier that day and cheated him through an online payment.
A case under sections 318(4) and 3(5) of the BNS Act was registered.
Accordingly under the supervision of Dr. Sachin Kumar Singhal, SP East Siang a team comprising of Ayup Boko, SDPO, Ruksin and SI Igel Lollen OC, PS Ruksin H/c MS. Bori, HC K. Ori CT. T. Rina, Ct. R. Padung and Ct. T. Ramwa was imediately formed to follow up the case.
The team apprehended Raj Thapa and subsequently arrested Boge Sonar, who was found to be involved in the scam.
Upon interrogation, it was discovered that the two individuals were using a fake mobile online payment application called “PhonePe” that closely resembles the original.
According to police, they had cheated numerous shopkeepers in Ruksin and Jonai using this fake app.
The investigation is ongoing as police suspect the involvement of more people in the scam.
